Killzone

Guerrilla

PS2

Body

-INTRO
A title born from envy (of a little more than average game), it loses at its own game.
-GRAPHICS(Tech)
You can feel the pain of the ole ps2 chips under pressure. Good drawing distance but frequent slowdowns.
-GRAPHIC(Art)
A vaguely interesting uber dark future setting, all is pretty much greyish which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Interesting architecture with lots of 45' angles.
-AMBIENCE
Average at best, the constant screams are quite annoying.
-CONTROLS
Typical FPS controls, nothing interesting about it.

Mind

-DIFFICULTY CURVE
Depends on character choice and is usually easy apart from those damn granades.
-LEVEL DESIGN
All the levels are simple and straightforward with little space for alternative tactics apart from some occasional flanking, but occasionally offer some good battlegounds on multiple levels and a few hiding spots. The different routes for different characters is literally a travesty.
-PUZZLE DESIGN
N/A
-FIGHTING SYSTEM
Battle are hindered by the enemies' weird behaviour, since the farther you are, the more chances you have to be shot at. Weapons look cool but are bad implemented, as is the multi-character stuff, like different weapons and resistance to enemy fire. Nevermind, you will only die because of granades.
-MAGIC SYSTEM
N/A
-DEBUGGING
All the signs of enforced deadlines are there, from missing sound fx like those of your guns or granades (when they don't disappear) to triggers failing to activate. That's bad Guerrilla, and lame.

Soul

-ORIGINALITY & INNOVATION
Most of the promised AI got dropped (prob because of framerate issues), a big hole in Guerrilla's plans of world conquer. Apart from art direction, everything else turned out to be mostly average. Nothing new but the style, more or less.
-STORY
Average Amerikan Action Movie bullshit of multiple military treachery. Cutscenes are hilarious but curiously well filmed. At least there are no squeaky aliens (yes you).
-ATMOSPHERE
The grey future struggle for recognition through the game's shortcomings.
-ARTISTIC VALUE
Not outside the background.
-PURE GAMING FUN
Mediocre & derivative FPShooting.

Extra info

-HOURS TO COMPLETION
6-8
-MULTIPLAYER
Online play with a couple of interesting modes but as we all know noone goes online with a PS2.
-PLAYER CUSTOMISATION
Just that annoying character choice at the beginning of main levels. Just go for Rico.
-EXTENDED & REPLAY VALUE
Not really.

Final Score

The potential was there but it tries too hard to be what it's not. The PS2 is getting old.
